About «Death and the Maiden»

Patricia Kopatchinskaja and CAMERATA BERN present an adaption of the  Grammy-awarded program «Death and the Maiden»: Works from the Middle Ages to modern times contrast and interweave Schubert's most famous quartet «Death and the Maiden». The song setting of the eponymous poem by Matthias Claudius, which was created earlier, can also be experienced in this program - with Patricia Kopatchinskaja as vocal artist.

The Maiden:
Pass me by! Oh, pass me by!
Go, fierce man of bones!
I am still young! Go, my dear
And do not touch me.

Death:
Give me your hand, you beautiful and tender form!
I am a friend, and come not to punish.
Be of good cheer. I am not fierce,
Softly shall you sleep in my arms.

Matthias Claudius, 1774
