Change to the programme

Sergio Azzolini unfortunately had to cancel the concerts on 1 and 2 November 2024. We would like to thank Dmitry Smirnov for being able to take over the direction of these concerts at short notice.

Due to this change, the programme also had to be revised. Instead of «Cantor gesucht!», the programme will now be «Bach polymorph»:

Gabriella Smith (*1991)
Brandenburg Interstices
for strings, flute and harpsichord

Johann Sebastian Bach
(1685–1750)
Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major BWV 1050 for harpsichord, flute, violin and strings

Jonny Greenwood
(*1971)
Pacay Tree
(48 Responses to Polymorphia) for strings and bean shakers

Johann Sebastian Bach

Concerto for three violins, strings and basso continuo in D major after BWV 1064

Caroline Shaw
(*1982)
Entr’acte
, version for string orchestra

Georg Friedrich Händel
(1685–1759)
Concerto grosso op. 6 No. 3 in E minor HWV 321

Programme with interval
Running time: approx. 2 hours

Dmitry Smirnov about the programme «Bach polymorph»:

Young living composers such as Gabriella Smith or Jonny Greenwood, juxtaposing the music with colours and textures, speak to our ears and hearts as greatly as Bach and Haendel. Even though Bach and Handel are talking to us from the past, they remain so beloved and so favourite to many of us.

This programme is a journey through time, colours and textures. That’s what inspired me when putting together the programme: the complexity of counterpoint and voice leading (Bach), the warm sentiment (Handel), the musical originality (Smith) and the generosity of ideas (Greenwood).
