What led you to become a musician?
A music-loving family with a lot of making music together at home: my parents played violin and piano, and my three siblings and myself all learned an instrument. There was never really anything else I wanted to be.
What are your interests outside of music?
Sports (running, cycling, swimming) and hiking.

About Friedemann Jähnig
Born in Chemnitz, Friedemann Jähnig began his musical education at the age of 6 with violin and piano. He attended the specialised school for music in Dresden and had lessons with Karl Unger. He then studied viola at the Hochschule für Musik Dresden with Prof. Alfred Schindler and Joachim Ulbricht, both coordinated principal violists of the Staatskapelle Dresden. In addition, he attended master classes with Prof. Rudolf Nel in Weimar (Internationales Musikseminar) and completed a two-year orchestra internship at the Staatskapelle Dresden, after which he was offered a contract. His diverse activities also included performances and worldwide touring as a soloist and chamber musician, particularly with the Dresdner Kammerorchester and in the Ensemble Virtuosi Saxoniae.
From 1994 to 2022, Friedemann Jähnig was a member of the Berner Symphonieorchester. He is a sought-after chamber music partner with a particular focus on his work with CAMERATA BERN (fixed ensemble member since 2008) and the Colla Parte Quartett. Friedemann Jähnig also appears regularly as a soloist. He is particularly interested in giving little known and rarely played works for viola the chance to be performed. Friedemann Jähnig lives with his family in Worb.
