Questions

Do you have a certain ritual before a concert?
Two deep breaths.

When and how did your path cross with CAMERATA BERN?
When I was close to finishing school, I attended two concerts in Karlsruhe and Basel. CAMERATA BERN played under the direction of Thomas Füri. This way of playing together without a conductor – back then it was still something unusual – fascinated me.

What is your favourite time of day to practice?
Early in the morning or in the still of the night.

About Martin Merker

Martin Merker studied cello at the music academies in Detmold (Karine Georgian), Basel (Reinhard Latzko and Ivan Monighetti) and Barcelona (Lluis Claret) and has won several prizes at international chamber music competitions. He has been a cellist with CAMERATA BERN since 1999, was a member of the board of trustees for over ten years and has played a key role in shaping the ensemble's concert programs for many years.

He has been cellist of the Offenburger Streichtrio since 1987 (CD recordings with the labels Ambitus, ANTES and Naxos) and was principal cellist of the Argovia Philharmonic from 2022 to 2021. In 1994 he founded the Kulturbüro Offenburg. Together with his wife Anna Adamik, professor at the Voralberger Landeskonservatorium, he has been giving concerts for over 20 years.

Several universities in Europe, the USA, Asia and South America have invited him as a guest lecturer and visiting professor. Since his student days, he has been interested in promoting contemporary composers and searching for forgotten music and bringing it to the attention of a broad concert audience.

In 2017, he decided to change his life and has been teaching pupils aged 6-82 at the Liechtensteinische Musikschule since August 2018.
