About the programme

Anyone applying for a job today sends in an application letter. It was no different in baroque Leipzig. But applicants for the coveted position of Thomaskantor also had to introduce themselves with a new composition. Bassoonist Sergio Azzolini, Artistic Partner of CAMERATA BERN, now presents such musical calling cards in his baroque program “Cantor gesucht!” (Cantor wanted!). J.S. Bach, for example, recycled music that was almost ten years old for his application process. Known today as the Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, it is opulently scored with horns, oboes and bassoon. His competitors in Leipzig also shone with sumptuous orchestrations: Fasch in a magnificent C major overture, Telemann with a violin double concerto. And Graupner's overture makes the horns roar. However, these three either hesitated to take the position or declined due to better offers. Only Bach stayed. For 27 years!
