CAMERATA BERN and violinist Antje Weithaas, on tour in Italy! Unlike many composers, neither Antonín Dvořák nor Joseph Haydn ever set foot on Italian soil. And Béla Bartók was not particularly fond of the country – or so it was said. So it's time to bring together Italy and at least the music of the three. And what better way to do this than with Dvořák's Serenade for Strings? Here, you feel as if you’re listening to the Bohemian summer—yet this “Serenata” is an entirely Italian invention.
Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances also radiate vitality and deep emotion. And Joseph Haydn, who himself so wanted to travel to Italy, and experience its music firsthand? He wrote his Violin Concerto in A major for the chapel of his employer, Prince Esterházy. As with Haydn's other violin concertos, it is believed that the soloist was the concertmaster of this orchestra. A certain Luigi Tomasini from – Italy.
