With a hopeful fanfare dissolving into radiant sound, CAMERATA BERN and pianist Alexander Melnikov usher in the new subscription season. This rarely heard composition was written by Benjamin Britten at the age of 26. Inspired by Hyperion, from the Romantic poet John Keats, Britten created a sensuous ode to the young god Apollo, embodiment of light, music and poetry.
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was barely out of childhood when, at fourteen, he composed his concerto for violin, piano and string orchestra, a work brimming with musical ideas. The brilliant solo parts are taken by Alexander Melnikov and ensemble member Meesun Hong Coleman.
Meesun Hong Coleman also appears in this programme as a composer: at the centre of the concert comes the world premiere of OTHER, a work with an autobiographical dimension that explores questions of cultural roots, belonging, and the space between different worlds.
