Twelve bars – perhaps symbolising the twelve months of the year – form Johann Sebastian Bach’s chorale prelude Das alte Jahr vergangen ist. In Protestantism, the period from Advent to Epiphany constitutes the Christmas season. And with Advent, the new church year begins.
For this festive, pre-Christmas concert of Baroque music by J.S. Bach, his son J.C.F. Bach and Arcangelo Corelli, CAMERATA BERN welcomes back its former artistic director Erich Höbarth for the first time in many years. As an additional guest and soloist, Swiss oboist Simon Sommerhalder adds a new colour to the string ensemble.
Joy and sorrow stand close together in this programme. The deepest melancholy, as in J.S. Bach's Sinfonia from the cantata Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, is counterbalanced by the hopeful joy and bliss of Corelli's Concerto grosso Fatto per la notte di Natale.
