Death and the Maiden, String Quartet No. 14 in D minor Op. post. D 810, version for string orchestra by Patricia Kopatchinskaja
With this programme are presenting three seemingly different works to our Japanese hosts: The Rage, written by our current director and soloist, is a very expressive work that lives up to its title. In the classically refined Violin Concerto in D minor by the 13-year-old Mendelssohn, Patricia Kopatchinskaja can once again showcase her outstanding, colourful playing.
The programme concludes with Schubert's probably best-known string quartet, Death and the Maiden, in a version for string ensemble. This late work by Schubert contains all the extremes of human existence: beginning and end, youth and old age, life and death.
