Summer music: what could that be? Certainly nothing in a minor key, and no late Romantic brooding either. At least not for ensemble member Anna Puig Torné. The violist has stumbled across Mozart—the bright, friendly lightness of the String Quintet in C major. This music belies the fact that the composer was experiencing a time full of personal and professional extremes in 1787, the year of its composition: financial difficulties, the illness of his father Leopold, but also the success of his Don Giovanni in Prague. 

Truly inspired by two violas is Johann Sebastian Bach’s 6th Brandenburg Concerto. In Bach’s original instrumentation, which has no violins, they play the top two parts. In its final movement, the Gigue is captivating in its lightness yet still full of nobility.
