Running time: approx. 1.5 hours
Pēteris Vasks' Violin Concerto No. 1 bears the title Distant Light for good reason: in it, the Latvian composer illuminates fragmentary sound worlds that seem light years away yet somehow close. The work stands at the centre of the programme and gives it its title.
In his Serenade for Strings in C major, op. 48, Peter Iljitsch Tschaikowski erects a musical monument to Mozart, whom he revered. Within it, he offers dizzyingly varied forms and styles, from waltz to elegy to folk-inflected passages, as if peering through a musical kaleidoscope.
The opening presto – pensoso by Swiss composer Philippe Racine illuminates both rapid runs and reflective, inward-turning sounds. This work was commissioned in 2012 by CAMERATA BERN in honour of the ensemble’s 50th anniversary. At the time, Antje Weithaas was artistic director of CAMERATA BERN, a position she held for over nine years.
