About the programme

Artistic Partner Patricia Kopatchinskaja translates the human life cycle into sound. With her own composition Ursprung der Welt – an artistic engagement with the cry of a mother in labour – the journey begins.

A child’s first tentative reaching and explorations are embodied in the harmonic unfoldings of Henry Purcell's Fantasia upon One Note, before the polyphonic branchings of György Ligeti's Ramifications mirror the endless possibilities of childhood.

Turning to youth and adult life, W.A. Mozart and Franz Schubert traverse the full spectrum of human emotional states in their compositions. Throughout, miniatures from György Kurtág's collection Signs, Games and Messages create transitions and space for reflection.

Erwin Schulhoff's Alla Tarantella marks a final rearing up. Now everything’s at stake! With the second movement from Robert Schumann's Violin Concerto and Schubert's Grab und Mond, the gaze turns finally towards other spheres.
