In one of his best-known chansons, Jacques Brel pleaded as an unhappy lover: “Ne me quitte pas”. Now the Swedish composer Britta Byström, well versed in the genre of orchestral music, has created a concerto for trumpet and strings based on Brel's hit. The idea was born in Bern, where the work will also be premiered.
Inspiration came from the trumpeter Jeroen Berwaerts – who like Brel is also from Belgium – known for his versatility and commitment to contemporary music. The world premiere of Byström's Pischop will be followed by a Suite tragique composed by Berwaerts, with Brel chansons and dance movements by Jean-Philippe Rameau. Berwaerts takes on the vocal part as the chansonnier.
Baroque and neoclassical music meet in the first part of the concert: first, a trumpet concerto by Tommaso Albinoni; then Arthur Honegger's deeply sad 2nd Symphony from 1941, where the composer reflects on the Second World War. Towards the very end, the trumpet’s chorale melody lends this work a hopeful glimmer.
