Danish folk songs
In an arrangement by the Danish String Quartet
The four musicians of CAMERATA BERN open the evening with Haydn's Emperor Quartet, a work full of clarity and elegance. The quartet owes its nickname to the variations on the Emperor's Hymn – later the German national anthem – in the second movement. The focus is on Schumann's first string quartet in A minor, Op. 41 – an expression of dense Romanticism, composed during his “chamber music year” in 1842 and characterized by deep emotionality and formal innovation. The programme is complemented by short, folkloristically inspired arrangements of Danish folk songs by the Danish String Quartet – pulsating, original, with Nordic melancholy and dance-like lightness.
