Running time: approx. 1.5 hours
A couple out for a walk at night. The woman confesses, the man forgives, and both are transfigured by their sublime love. This is how Richard Dehmel's poem Verklärte Nacht could be summarized. Arnold Schönberg's string sextet of the same name follows the emotional course of Dehmel's lines exactly. His late Romantic composition is also a precise portrait, of an entire era shaped by shame but also by the capacity for deep love.
Karl Amadeus Hartmann wrote his violin concerto Concerto funebre in 1939 as a reaction to Nazi Germany’s destruction of Czechoslovakia and subsequent annexation of parts of the country. The composition contrasts what Hartmann called the “spiritual hopelessness” of the time, with two chorales as beacons of hope. The exceptional violinist Alina Ibragimova completes her first program for CAMERATA BERN with excerpts from Johann Sebastian Bach's The Art of Fugue.
